The Wave Information Studies (WIS) is a US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) sponsored project that generates consistent, hourly, long-term (20+ years) wave climatologies along all US coastlines, including the Great Lakes and US island territories.
Since wave hindcasts are often verified by comparing the maximum hindcast and measured significant wave heights in a storm, the bias due to sampling variability can make a correct hindcast appear to be too low.
In this paper we show how the magnitude of the biases can be calculated from the sample length and the shape of the wave spectrum. The objective of the Wave Information Studies is to provide high-quality coastal wave hindcast model estimates, wave analyses products and decision tools nationwide.

Often the DOC is used in coastal engineering design for projects such as beach and nearshore berm nourishments, and jetty and navigation channel designs. The dataset provided here estimates DOCs for all of the coast lines of the United States, including the Great Lakes, using the USACE Wave Information Study (WIS) wave hindcast data.
A third generation wave model run four times a day (00Z, 06Z, 12Z, and 18Z). Each run starts with 9- 6- and 3-hour hindcasts and produces forecasts of every 3 hours from the initial time out to hours (84 hours for the Great Lakes).
